In her recent WP2 ENACT blog, Dr Rutvica Andrijasevic drew attention to the potential links between the ENACT project and Judith Butler’s work, focusing attention in particular on the importance of moving away from a focus on inclusion (inside/outside) and instead developing a framework that takes focuses on differential recognition and precarity (see http://www.enacting-citizenship.eu/index.php/sections/blog_post/275/ ). This blog forms the starting point for WP3’s response to this suggestion, and draws in part on Dr Vicki Squire’s initial response to Dr Andrijasevic’s suggestion.

The Roma in Italy: racism as usual?

A couple of months ago I wrote a commentary for Radical Philosophy on the situation of the Roma in Italy. It argues that, rather than exceptional, racism against the Roma is deeply embedded in liberal politics. Security has increasingly legitimised measures against the Roma as necessary for the proper functioning of society.
