Work package 8. Enacting European citizenship in Latvia

We analyse how the process of Latvia becoming member of the EU changed the ways Latvian citizens enact European citizenship by examining the interrelationship between policy approaches of the EU institutions before and after enlargement and specific groups in Latvia.

Enacting European Citizenship in Latvia: national, minority and civic youth discourses
Latvia is a new member state of the European Union. Citizenship issues in Latvia were prominent during membership negotiations and the process of bringing national laws and practices into line with the Copenhagen criteria. One key reason for this is the distinctive history of Latvia, not least problems inherited from its Soviet past. Another reason is the active participation by different national minorities and different groups of non-citizens in the relevant discussions.
