Work package 3. Enacting mobility: a more democratic European citizenship?

The EU is caught in a paradoxical situation of a denationalization of the economic and security space with a re-nationalization of political discourse. This paradox has translated in the EU into an attempt to produce a European nationalism conceptualized in terms of value integration. While European citizenship is modelled upon the national conceptualizations of citizenship, the EU as a multi-level political and socio-economic project inherently questions the primacy of the national reference. This work package challenges the value-oriented concept of European citizenship derived from the national models of member states by investigating ‘acts’ of mobile citizens and their implications for constituting a genuinely democratic European citizenship.

On marginality
In her recent WP2 ENACT blog, Dr Rutvica Andrijasevic drew attention to the potential links between the ENACT project and Judith Butler's work, focusing attention in particular on the importance of moving away from a focus on inclusion (inside/outside) and instead developing a framework that takes focuses on differential recognition and precarity (see http://www.enacting-citizenship.eu/index.php/sections/blog_post/275/ ). This blog forms the starting point for WP3's response to this suggestion, and draws in part on Dr Vicki Squire's initial response to Dr Andrijasevic's suggestion.
