During this period we have focused on the manner in which international and European law engages with loss of citizenship. International standards could be an important avenue for the protection of individuals facing loss of citizenship as they impose limits to the sovereignty of states in nationality matters.
We have focused only on a limited number of international instruments setting standards on this subject matter as well as on relevant supranational judicial decisions. The actual impact of these international standards in the national arena will be possible to evaluate in the chapter dedicated to particular countries.

State of the art: what has been written on deprivation of citizenship, the reasons and arguments in the selected Member States. Analysis of the law (and jurisprudence) of five member states on the withdrawal of citizenship – the Netherlands, the UK, France, Germany and Belgium.
